Recently Liz accepted the position of North Carolina State Director for Personal Ponies LTD.  She hopes to be able to organize events and activities for ponies soon.  Currently,  Jake's Flat Farm participates in the "Pony Ambassador" component of Personal Ponies.  We currently are home to four very special ponies, Tucker, Dugan, Peanut Butter, and Jelly.

Tucker and Dugan are minature Shetland Ponies.   Presently these little cuties work with children and adolescents or who ever shows up to play.  Tiny, weighing under 200 pounds and measuring under 29 inches, these little fellows are all fur and personality.

They are even fluffier than Peanut Butter and Jelly.  These two are not very happy about Twinkle practicing her herding skills on them.  Dugan recently discovered that if he ducked his head, the fur on his back insulated him from the fence, allowing him to pass through with no penalty…unless he was damp.  That strategy didn’t work out as well for Peanut Butter.  None the less, Dugan often slips through the fence on dry days to play with Tuff .Tuff is delighted with his visits and not always happy when he goes home, (unless he stays for dinner).

Dugan is a mischevious little fellow.  He loves to play and is always looking to untie someone's shoes, nibble fine jewelry, tickle an unsuspecting little boy, or remove someone's halter.

He also enjoys things that aren't supposed to be such as wearing Valentine's halter even though it doesn't fit, or spending an afternoon with Tuff in the "big horse pasture".  He also enjoys a stolen snack from time to time out of Tuff's dish.  Dugan has had a busy year plotting to take over the world.  He is in the middle of everything as usual.  He has enjoyed watching and assisting workers whether they are building, mowing or cleaning up.  He was very disappointed when we added a lower rail to the arena so he can't go under the fence anymore.  Dugan is excited about our upcoming pony party for the Lamb Family, raffled this spring by Carolina Hoofprints.  Last summer he was able to pull the cart for the Odom Children at their Pony Party which was raffled by the Lady Elks.

Dugan gives children a ride in the cart.

Tucker is a sweet companion to anyone who wants a friend.  He is kind and gentle to everyone and a favorite member of the tickle circle.  Tucker prefers to follow the rules and stay out of trouble, he seems to leave that to Dugan.  He got a new fly Mask this spring which he is very proud to wear.  He is very Cute with his little fat belly.

Claire and Tucker enjoy running and jumping as a team.(spring 2008)

Valentine

Monday, June 16, 2008 was Valentine's Day at Jake's Flat.  Valentine arrived from Madison, NC and immediately joined the herd.  Valentine is a 33' tall Minature Horse.  She enjoys carrots, pets and hugs.  So far, like Magic, we are finding that bath's aren't her favorite activity.  By the way, her name is Valentine because her birthday is on Valentine's Day(secret tip).  Valentine is not really a pony even though she is smaller than many ponies.  Valentine is actually a registered minature horse.  She also appears on the horse page.

Dugan plays an EAGALA game called "Equine Billards" during a summer workshop.  The object of the game is for each horse to  enter and remain a short time in a designated area without being touched or bribed.  Dugan is often the first contestant chosen because he is so friendly.  (Turns out to be more difficult than it looks.)

Dugan also learned to pull a cart this year.  His first cart was a "pvc" frame.  He now has a real pony cart and really enjoys given children rides in the driveway.  His goal is to be in a parade.

Valentine gives a great first ever ride to a little girl, Summer 2008.

Peanut Butter &  Jelly

Peanut Butter and Jelly are UK Shetlend Ponies that are ambassador ponies from Personal Ponies LTD.  These two little cuties are a pair of silver dapple chocolate ponies that are large enough to be ridden by children or driven by anyone.  In January 2010, Peanut Butter and Jelly started their "pony Jobs"  They have moved to South Carolina to live with a "placement family" so that they can make the dream of a special little girl come true.  We wish them and their new family the very best.  We are looking forward to hearing all of their news.  GO PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY!!! YOU ARE THE BEST!!!
